Character Information[]
Background[]
So, you want to know my life story eh? Fine, I’ll tell you, but the story is about at pretty as I am. The first thing you should know is I’m the younger of a set of fraternal twins. My “older” brother Rydion and I used to be inseparable, like most twins seem to be. We would get into trouble constantly in our little village in the Shadow March. Our village would be used as a stop over for all the House Tharashk members out finding dragonshards, so it was moderately prosperous.
Mother was a barmaid at the Busty Wench tavern, and while it wasn’t the good life she had always hoped for, it put food on the table and allowed us to bed down in one of the adjoining inn’s rooms. We never knew our father, probably because Mother says we were the result of a what I now know to be a barmaid’s “extra” duty. Our chores consisted of menial labors that children could do, dust this, peal that, that sort of thing. It gave us plenty of time to make a little mischief. I remember one time Rydion put a small bag of flour above the door, and then screamed like he cut himself on one of Chef Victoria’s knives. The look on her face when the flour dumped on her head was priceless, and so was watching the resulting punishment force him not to sit for a week.
Life was pretty good for us, but it got much better once Rydion manifested the Mark of Finding a few days after our twelfth birthday. Mother was so proud, and rushed off to the local liaison to House Tharashk. Before we knew it, we were both being whisked away to Zarash’ak. He was quickly inducted into the House, as it was confirmed that someone from the House had fathered us those many years ago. The next year is a blur as they trained him in the use of his mark, and tried to get me to manifest one of my own. It was decided that we would be allowed to see our Mother for our thirteenth birthday, and while we were visiting, Rydion would test his mark in the field. Kathman, our chaperone went out about a half mile and set up a few training shards for Rydion to find. We found the first two when a small gang of Khyber Cultists rushed us from a nearby forest. Most rushed Kathman and Rydion, but an ugly human with a rusty halberd came for me. I scooped up a few stones and started chucking them at him as he approached. I thought for sure I was going to die, especially when I felt a searing pain in my thigh, but the pain quickly turned to warmth and strength. As the halberd was falling, I leapt to the side, and I felt my thigh “wound” flare up. I rolled back up onto my feet and turned to the halberdier, much to my surprise he was 15 feet away. I continued to kite him around in a similar manner while Kathman slew the others Khyber scum, and he eventually ran my assailant through as well.
When I returned home, I went to the hayloft to try and figure out what happened when I examined my thigh to discover a dragonmark! I was so happy that I could stay with my brother always now! When I told him his look of joy quickly became despair as we realized I didn’t have the Mark of Finding like he did, but a different one. We vowed to keep my mark a secret until we could learn more, and when we returned to Zarash’ak, we learned that I had the Mark of Passage, normally reserved by House Orien. One problem with trying to keep my mark hidden was that Kathman had been so impressed with my nimbleness, he had me begin training with the Houses archers and scouts.
My training went amazing for the first few years, I started slowly with slings and short bows, then progressing to long and once I started reaching physical maturity, I was one of the few strong enough to string and use the greatbow. We trained in wielding weapons in each hand, and combat mobility, and some of us participated in grueling exercises designed to toughen us up. Everything was going well until it was decided that a few of us would compete for an open officer rank. I know I should have declined the offer, but this was my chance to prove to everyone how strong I’d become. Show them I did.
I was never a star at testing and tactics, so I finished in the middle of the pack when it came to that portion of the exam, but I knew my strength would be the combat maneuvers. The 6 of us were split up into teams of 2, and would be judged both on our individual talents, and how well we worked on a team. I was paired up with Bey, a decent fighter and tactician, but one who liked melee instead of ranged. We hit upon the tactic of him being the bait while I hide, then he would hit and run one while I sniped the other on the team. It worked fairly well until one of the other combatants charged into me. With live steel flashing past me, since we had medical staff on hand, my impulses I had tried to quell for years flared up again, and I began performing moves that we nearly impossible without some form of aide. The other combatants cried foul, and I was disqualified for cheating and locked in my room. They believed I had some form of magical amulet or something, and I was to admit how I did it and submit to punishment the next day.
That evening, my brother snuck me some supplies and gear, and distracted the guards while I snuck out into the March. I have been living from day to day, week to week for the past few years. I might guard a merchant caravan for a bit, be a farmhand for a season, or just live in the wilderness hunting for my food. I had a few run-in’s with Khyber cultists while crossing Droaam, and have relieved them of a few choice bits of equipment. I’m heading to Sharn, looking for a new life away from the March, one full of adventure and acceptance
